Mastering Functional Harmony with the Circle of Fifths

The Circle of Fifths organizes the 12 chromatic pitches into an intuitive geometric circle of ascending perfect fifths (clockwise) and descending perfect fourths (counter-clockwise). Full Partituras Studio Theory Lab provides an interactive, audio-enabled environment for songwriters, guitarists, and music students to master functional harmony.

Core Music Theory Concepts

  • Key Signatures & Accidentals: Moving clockwise from C Major adds sharps (G=1♯, D=2♯, A=3♯), while moving counter-clockwise adds flats (F=1♭, B♭=2♭, E♭=3♭).
  • Diatonic Chord Families: For any selected root, the circle highlights primary triads—Tonic (I), Subdominant (IV), and Dominant (V)—alongside secondary minor chords (ii, iii, vi).
  • Pivot Chord Modulation: Neighboring keys share six common diatonic notes, making adjacent circle positions ideal for harmonic transitions.
  • Relative Minor Keys: The inner ring displays relative minor keys sharing the identical key signature with their major relative.

How to master key signatures and chord relationships with the Circle of Fifths

  1. Select any root key on the interactive Circle of Fifths wheel to set your tonal center.
  2. Toggle between Explore Mode to inspect diatonic chords and Learn Mode for interactive harmonic lessons.
  3. Analyze key signatures, sharp/flat accidental counts, and the relative minor key in the inner ring.
  4. Audition diatonic scale degrees and chord families (Tonic, Subdominant, Dominant) with audio playback.
