Build a looping chord backing and practice your solos
Build your own backing to improvise over on guitar or any other instrument: pick 4 chords, press “Play” and solo over the loop. You can also start from one of the 8 ready-made progressions.
This backing track generator plays the chords with a piano or pad sound and a metronome click, with no drums or bass. It runs in your browser, free and with no sign-up.
The tool opens right here in your browser when the page finishes loading.
How to build your backing track
- Pick the chords: press “Add chord” in each of the 4 slots and choose the root and the chord type. Each slot shows its guitar diagram.
- Or use a progression: “Preset progressions” has 8 of them, in pop, blues, jazz (ii–V–I), rock, lo-fi, folk and R&B styles; “Random” loads one at random.
- Set the tempo: from 40 to 200 BPM, with 1, 2, 4 or 8 beats per chord. You can change it while the loop plays, without it stopping.
- Choose the sound: “Piano” or “Pad”, both synthesized in your browser, plus the “Metronome” click if you want it, with an accent on the first beat of each chord.
Which scales to improvise with
“Scales to improvise with” suggests which scales fit your progression. It works them out from every note of the chords, not just the roots: over the A blues (A7, D7 and E7) it suggests A Mixolydian, A major pentatonic and A blues; over a ii–V–I in C (Dm7, G7 and Cmaj7), C major and its pentatonic.
Start with the first scale on the list and, once you feel at home, aim for the notes of each chord right when it changes. If the chords mix several keys, the page tells you: then follow the notes of each chord.
A chord backing, not a full band
This is a looping pad of chords for practicing solos and arpeggios: it has no drums or bass, no rhythm styles, and it can't be downloaded as audio or MIDI.
If you want a drum beat, pair it with the Full Partituras drum machine. If you want the progression as a MIDI file, use the MIDI chord progressions.
Frequently asked questions
How do I practice improvising over a chord backing?
Pick a progression, set a comfortable tempo and play only the notes of the suggested scale. Once that feels easy, aim for the notes of each chord right when it changes, and raise the tempo little by little.
Does the backing have drums or bass?
No. It is a chord loop with a piano or pad sound and a metronome click. To add a drum beat, open the Full Partituras drum machine in another tab.
Can I use more than 4 chords?
No, the loop has 4 slots. To make a chord last longer, repeat it in two slots or raise the beats per chord.
Can I change the key of the ready-made progressions?
They don't transpose on their own: each one is in a fixed key. To play one in another key, change the chords slot by slot.
Can I download the backing track?
No: the backing only plays on the page. If you want a progression as MIDI, use the MIDI chord progressions or export the chords of a song with Chord AI.
Is it free, and does it work on my phone?
Yes: it is free, needs no sign-up and runs in the browser of your phone, tablet or computer, with nothing to upload or install.
