Split a song into vocals, drums, bass, guitar, piano and other

Upload a song and split it into 6 stems: vocals, drums, bass, guitar, piano and other instruments. Listen to them separately, change the volume of each one or mute the ones you don't need, and download the stems you want as MP3s.

This stem separator uses Demucs (the htdemucs_6s model), Meta's open-source neural network, on our server. Free, with no sign-up.

The tool opens right here in your browser when the page finishes loading.

How to split a song into stems

  • Upload the song: press “Choose an audio file” and choose an audio file up to 30 MB and 5 minutes long.
  • Split it: press “Separate into 6 tracks”. It takes several minutes: about 8 for a 5-minute song. If you allow it, your browser tells you when it is done.
  • Listen and mix: “Play all tracks” plays all 6 stems in sync; each one has its own volume and a mute button.
  • Download: each stem as a 256 kbps MP3, or your mix as a single WAV file with “Download mix”.

Make your own backing track

“Quick mixes” set the volumes in one click: “Karaoke” mutes the vocals; “Practice guitar”, “Practice piano” and “Practice drums” turn that instrument almost all the way down so you can play the part yourself; and “Full mix” puts everything back at 100%.

When it sounds right, “Download mix” mixes the stems in your browser at those volumes and downloads a WAV: for example, the song without the guitar so you can practice the solo, or without the drums so you can play them.

Which stems come out best

Vocals, drums and bass usually separate more cleanly than guitar and piano. The guitar stem is usable, but the piano stem often carries a lot of bleed and artifacts: the Demucs authors themselves call this 6-stem model experimental.

The guitar stem holds both acoustic and electric guitars, and the other stem collects everything else: synths, horns, strings… Lead and backing vocals come out together in the vocal stem.

Frequently asked questions

How do I separate the instruments of a song?

Choose the audio with “Choose an audio file” and press “Separate into 6 tracks”. A few minutes later you have 6 stems to listen to separately, mix and download.

How much does it cost to split a song into stems?

Nothing: it is free, with no sign-up. The limits are 30 MB per file and 5 minutes per song, and the server splits one song at a time; if it is busy, try again in a moment.

Why does it take several minutes?

Splitting into 6 stems is the heaviest job in the Studio, and our server has no graphics card: a 5-minute song takes about 8 minutes, plus the upload and any queue. You can leave the page open and do something else.

Can I get just the vocals and the instrumental?

Yes, with the vocal remover, which splits the song into 2 tracks and is a bit quicker.

Does it separate backing vocals from the lead, or rhythm guitar from lead guitar?

No. Lead and backing vocals come out together in the vocal stem, and all the guitars in the guitar stem. It doesn't split the kick from the snare either: the drums come out as one stem.

What format are the stems and the mix in?

Each stem is a 256 kbps MP3. The “Download mix” file is a 16-bit WAV that your browser builds on the spot. There is no ZIP download: the stems are downloaded one by one.

Does my song stay on your server?

No. The original is deleted as soon as the separation ends, and the 6 stems can be downloaded for one hour before they are deleted. The WAV mix is made in your browser and uploads nothing.
